Kep Sailing Club

From 11/6

A couple days late here, but we didn't use Internet for the time we were in Koh Rong so I have a bit of catch up to do. I wrote most of these the evening of the actual day, so it's actually written in real time more or less.

We woke up early to make it down to the beach today to soak it all in. We had a quick breakfast at our resort and walked to the beach. It's not super close, but maybe 1.5km south of our resort.

The beach was pretty nice, the town is super small and not touristy which is nice. And it actually has a public beach that is a public beach - as opposed to Mui Ne where we used the only chunk of beach that wasn't absorbed by the resorts (yet).

The beach had a little bit of garbage on it, but far better than your typical Bradford beach or Green Lake or Lake Washington. The water was still super nice and is so refreshing to jump in after sitting in the scorching sun. We were getting a little hungry so Alex asked if we can get a bite to eat. I said yeah, but let me finish my book. I had like five pages left of the Gold Finch and I really just needed to finish it. Such a good book by the way. As I was finishing the book it started to sprinkle. It had sprinkled on and off earlier, so I thought we would probably be fine, but I didn't want my iPad (courtesy of Scott Nuechterlein) getting wet.

So I told Al let's pack up in case to starts to really rain. Keep in mind too we had been hearing thunder in the distance over the water all morning, but we knew it was far off. As we started packing up and walked towards the town it started to pick up, and then start pouring. It made our lunch decision an easy one as we walked right into the closest place. Then it REALLY started to downpour for about 10-15 minutes. I'm lucky I decided to postpone finishing my book.

That's probably the more exciting story of the day. After lunch we went back to our resort and sat by the pool both because it was one of two pools we would have to relax by this trip, but also in case it started raining again. The view from the pool is unbeatable and there's something about pool water after you swam in salt water.

We just RWC for the rest of the afternoon and then headed over to the Sailing Club for dinner - a Lonely Planet recommendation. It was relatively more expensive than other dinners, but still totaled to $40 for two cocktails per person and a seafood platter for two (and it wasn't Red Lobster quality).

(View from our table)

This was one of my top favorite places to dine. The views were amazing, the people were extremely friendly and helpful, and the area around the club was spectacular. We played cribbage as we are and drank and watch the sun set behind the storm clouds.

Once we filled up on what we thought was an appetizer platter, we headed back with our iPhone flashlights (since there are no streetlights). We went for a quick final swim in the pool before a FaceTime session with the parents and heading to bed. We have a 7:30am bus ride tomorrow so we tried to get to bed early, despite knowing all the creepy bugs, lizards, and bats that were lurking around us.

Kep was a cool quiet town. It wasn't what I was expecting, but once I accepted it as a quiet town that hasn't been exploited by resorts yet I truly enjoyed it. It's been a great place to relax and do nothing, since there isn't much to do. Tomorrow we're off to Sihanoukville and onto a ferry to Koh Rong. The island should be beautiful, and we're staying in a treehouse!

"No changing of place at a hundred miles an hour will make us one whit stronger, or happier, or wiser. There was always more in the world than man could see, walked they ever so slowly; they will see it no better for going fast. The really precious things are thought and sight, not pace. It does a bullet no good to go fast; and a man, if he be truly a man, no harm to go slow; for his glory is not at all in going, but in being."
